Social media

How did social media posting/content breech the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act.

This act deals with offences committed by communicating something by any means, whether electronically (e.g. social media, email, text) or otherwise, such as  Harassment, malicious communications, stalking, threatening violence, incitement are all crimes and have been for a long time.


Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat act. Have little control  over what users post, most control is reactive, Company protection: ensures their legal position, though a simple measure - terms and conditions.


Regulatory Bodies 

IPSO - Can monitor content generated by magazine publishers or News agencies.

ASA - Can Monitor Adverts and Advertising Content.

Ofcom - Can monitor all social media content and hold SM companies to account since Jan 2024.

BBFC - Can monitor and classify film content online. 


Social media at work 

Individuals with social media accounts often have to agree T&C's of employment regarding social media. The main point is that employees should exercise self-regulation to avoid causing and damage to their employers image on social media. Individuals make choices about what to publish a prosumers on social media. 


What are the risks of allowing 'Free speech' on twitter: hateful views can be posted and influence others. This is proven by Kanye West tweets that promote hate speech influences his followers allot of witch are minors, because they are minors they are more easily influenced by their idols.


Social media and panic 

Moral - standards of behavior, principals of right and wrong
Panic - sudden uncontrollable fear
The idea of a Moral Panic is that someone or something evil/negative is threatening the normal way of life. Historically this has led to literal Witch hunts, outing communist, antisemitism and various other groups as being dangerous.
Whereas in the period before the 1990s Moral Panics were spread by word of mouth, rumor and tabloid journalism. The rise of the internet use and access led to information (and misinformation) being spread far and wide more rapidly. With the advent of web 2.0 and social media becoming more popular, Moral panics spread more widely and quickly.

Moral panic online example: covid jab, American abortion rights, video games, slipknot, gender rights, immigration, Fake news.
